The IKEA HUNDSTOL Highchair for Dogs is a unique product designed to enhance the dining experience for canine family members. This innovative highchair aims to bring dogs closer to the family mealtime by providing them with their own seat at the table.
The HUNDSTOL features a clever design tailored specifically for dogs, incorporating holes for the dog’s front legs to ensure a comfortable and ergonomic seating position. Additionally, it includes an integrated bowl positioned at table height, allowing dogs to eat simultaneously with their human family members.
The announcement was made on April 1st by IKEA Australia. The following YouTube video shares everything we need to know.
HUNDSTOL Dog Highchair
The YouTube description stated:
The IKEA HUNDSTOL dog highchair is a safe, aesthetically pleasing and reasonably priced product to accommodate the growing demand for furniture that reflects today’s modern family.
The HUNDSTOL dog highchair is available from April in all IKEA stores (Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane)
Price: $59
IKEA Designer Alvar Karlsson opens the video by saying, “Not only is the dog a part of the family, they’re like a trial run for kids. So, we started looking at pet furniture needs.”
He goes on to say:
In the wild, dogs share food together, play together, sleep together. The HUNDSTOL Doggy Highchair simulates what naturally occurs in the wild resulting in a balanced and more happier animal.
Because “Dog comfort is paramount” to the design team, there is a hole in the back of the chair for the tail and a grip on the seat of the chair for stability.
And because no one really wants a dog food or water bowl on the family dinner table, the team designed two inset bowls that are easily removed for washing.
HUNDSTOL Features
Ergonomic Design
The highchair includes holes for the dog’s front legs, ensuring a natural, comfortable sitting position for the dog. This design reduces the stress on the pet’s body, allowing them to sit upright without strain.
Integrated Dining Bowl
Positioned at the perfect height for the dog to eat comfortably from the table, the integrated bowl is designed for easy access to food or water, facilitating simultaneous dining experiences with the family.
Adjustable Height
To accommodate dogs of various sizes, the HUNDSTOL highchair features an adjustable height mechanism. This ensures that the chair can be used for small, medium, and some larger breeds.
Safety Features
The chair is equipped with safety harnesses to secure the dog safely in the chair, preventing any risk of falling or jumping out during meal times. These harnesses are designed to be comfortable and easily adjustable.
Easy to Clean
Recognizing that cleanliness is crucial in items used for feeding, the highchair is made from materials that are easy to wipe down and clean. The dining bowl is also detachable for convenient washing.
Stylish Aesthetics
True to IKEA’s reputation, the HUNDSTOL highchair boasts a minimalist and modern design that can fit into various home decors without appearing obtrusive or out of place.
Durable Materials
Constructed from durable materials, the highchair is designed to withstand the wear and tear of regular use, ensuring longevity and resistance to the energetic behavior of pets.
Compact and Space-Efficient
While sturdy, the design also considers space efficiency, making it easy to store when not in use or to integrate into dining areas without taking up excessive space.
Response To The HUNDSTOL
As you can imagine, IKEA’s announcement on April 1st gained mixed reactions.
Some realized the date and clicked right away. And others thought the product was real.
Of course, this was an April Fools’ Day prank!
Comments included:
- Hahah the hole at the back for the tail…. love it.
- I just picked up my hundstol and it’s perfect for my kid.
- It’s funny because our dog would actually use this.
- Does it come in French Bulldog size?
- Dog not included? Darn.
- “Dogs…are like a trial run for kids” LOL!
- The dog seems to enjoy the high chair. Perhaps IKEA should run with it.
But not everyone realized the joke, such as this user:
How does the dog get up? Are we supposed to carry a massive dog onto the high chair?
Or this person who became quite angry at IKEA:
Not only is this extremely stupid, but completely unnecessary.
First off, a dog (as much as it is a part of the family) should be in a submissive role to the owner. In the canine world, the alpha (AKA the HUMAN) eats first than the dog…
Second of all, I wouldn’t want my dog eating at the table to begin with! Why would I want the smell of dog food getting mixed up with my steak?
Way to go Ikea… Way to go…
But there were plenty who wanted this to exist, with another person commenting, “Why don’t we start a campaign to get them to actually make this?!?” and “Oh I really want one for my dog!!!!”.
What are your thoughts?
